The 1953 Léoville-Barton displayed a rather metallic nose at first. It seemed to suppress the fruit and make it very surly compared to the more vivacious ’53 Las-Cases. The palate is much better and more representative. It offers sweet red cherries and strawberry fruit interlaced with a fine bead of acidity. It is not as powerful or as deep as the Las-Cases but there is a pleasant tangy marmalade note towards the structured and rather bucolic, animally finish. No, it does not deliver a long aftertaste but it has a sense of faded class.
